Agrifresh History

Agrifresh is a story of passion, dedication and hunger; and in order to understand the beauty and success of this company, we have to take you back in time.

 

  1. The Roots

    It all started back in 1928 when our great grandmother had to step in to assume the role of both parents and take care of family with 7 kids after the death of her husband. She had in possession a small land of 5,000 m2 in Zahle which she started harvesting by growing Potatoes and Green chickpeas.

  2. The Foundation

    Obviously, working in a land of 5,000 square meter was not enough to feed a family of 7, so our grandfather (Joseph Doummar) started also working with other farmers supporting them and learning from them; and Little by little, he grew the business from owning and harvesting a 5,000 square meters in zahle to owning & Managing more than 1,000,000 square meters across the Bekaa valley.

  3. The development

    Georges Doummar (aka The Uncle), used to spend more and more time with his father in the field and ended up growing a very strong passion for agriculture and decided to pursue his studies in agriculture engineering which he completed in year 2000. Having strong passion and being educated, Georges approached the work differently;  he wanted to develop and completely transform the business with an aim to transform the whole agriculture sector in Lebanon. He was the first to bring "planters” to Lebanon, and one of the first to start using new and sophisticated irrigation systems while building more and more modern greenhouses in order to grow and produce across the year.

  4. Agrifresh

    Knowing that agriculture cannot only be about growing and selling vegetables & Fruits. Georges wanted to do more. In 2015, Agrifresh was born. Agrifresh satisfied his need and transformed his business from a simple farming company to a Global food industrial company. Agrifresh started with only 1 customer, that used to buy shredded cabbage, then little by little, we added more items and managed to convince more and more restaurants to move from vegetables, to ready to eat vegetables. Between 2015 and 2019, Agrifresh grew to become by far the largest player in the market. Today, we are Lebanese agricultural and food industrial company, that produces healthy and fresh cut vegetables under the highest international health standards (GLOBAL G.A.P; FSSC 22000, Yum!) using the latest technology and equipment.

  5. Agrifresh Home

    In the midst of the economic crisis and a global pandemic, restaurants in Lebanon were heavily impacted and their orders dropped by more than 70%. Having that in mind, we decided to create a new segment, called Agrifresh Home; a business to consumer model that will ensure that our products reaches every home either through our own delivery services or through retail shops. This segment started with 6 clients in February 2020, and by January 2021 we were executing and delivery more than 460 orders per day across the country.

  6. Agrifresh Dehydrated

    As the economic and political crisis continued worsening, we decided to enter a new market. The dried product market. We had 2 objectives in mind; 1- Create a valuable product that could be exported and substitute import. 2- Reduce farming and production waste by utilizing our grade B products (Bad shape, bad size, etc.) and transforming them into dehydrated vegetables (e.g. Dried mint, dried garlic, tomato powder, etc.)

  7. Farming automation and beyond

    Being the backbone of our food industrial business, it was time to re-transform and develop our farming business. In 2024, we fully automated our seedling production using innovative mechanical and fully automated machines that ensure uniform and close to perfection growth (98+%) and healthy plants. In parallel we invested in transplanters from "Fedele" in Italy to fully automate the transplantation of seedlings in both greenhouses and open fields, allowing for optimal spacing and environmental control to maximize crop yields.
